This one day training covers air-tightness from top to bottom in a day. Starting with a short discussion on what an air barrier is, and how to define it on your project,  the day quickly becomes a hands-on class that details how an air barrier is made, how it fits at a ceiling junction, how it connects to the foundation or slab, how it works around balconies, decks, and overhangs,  and how it connects to plumbing, sprinklers and vents.
Air barriers can be placed at the interior or exterior of a building. It's not uncommon to have a section of the air barrier on the exterior and another section on the interior. Attendees will be able to experiment with ways to connect the outside to the inside and take the best advantage of project and material options. Attendees will work with a wide range of air-sealing materials and get a deep understanding of available materials, and how they perform.

About the Training

This one day class was developed in 2016 to help builders meet the City Of Vancouver requirements of 3.5 ACH50 by the air-tightness experts at RDH Building Science, and Small Planet Supply. Since then, over 300 builders, architects and inspectors have been trained to plan and build projects with complete air barriers.

Now offered at a reduced fee and Province wide through funding from Fortis, BC Hydro and BC Housing.

In addition to regular classes held at the BCIT High Performance Building Lab, we have created a training lab on wheels to bring the one day class to a location near you. The regular $350 seat has also been reduced to $250 for a full day class.

Classes are held on selected Saturdays and start promptly at 9:00 AM and end at 5:00 PM. Lunch is provided, so just bring yourself and work clothes you don't mind dirty, as you work on full-scale building section mock-ups. Students will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the class, and will be ready to make air-tight buildings that meet blower door requirements.
