Five Reasons to Use KlimaGuard Building Tapes

Small Planet Supply has provided KlimaGuard building tapes for the budget conscious builder since 2019. Since then, KlimaGuard has been popular with homeowners and builders interested in eco- conscious and net-zero buildings. Our newest products expand this line of building tapes allowing it to be used in even more applications. If you haven’t joined the bandwagon yet, here are five reasons to try KlimaGuard on your next project.

1.    Cost

Every project has a budget, whether it’s a basic home renovation or a from-the-ground-up Passive House build. Wouldn’t it be great if you didn’t have to cut corners on quality to money on your project? KlimaGuard aims to meet this need as it is priced competitively to big name brands without sacrificing on quality. The savings per roll can really add up when you realize it can take several rolls at different sizes to complete a project. KlimaGuard Vario can be used on the exterior for everything from window flashing and sheathing membrane sealing, to deep parapet and wide base sealing. With so many places to use KlimaGuard, there are great savings to be had.

2.    Sticks Like Crazy

KlimaGuard Vario is developed exclusively for Small Planet Supply and made in Germany to high standards. The Vario uses an acrylate adhesive system that bonds amazingly well to a wide variety of substrates:  wood, concrete, weather resistive membranes, polyethylene, and rigid foam.  All of these surfaces become bonded extremely well when KlimaGuard is applied properly. As long as the surfaces are free of dust and oil, and clear of cleaning agent residues, the acrylate adhesive will form an airtight seal with very high aging resistance when pressure is applied. With a temperature resistance in the range of -40f to 176f, KlimaGuard Vario is suitable for all but the most extreme environments, but who’s building in Antarctica or on the surface of Venus anyway?

3.    Red List Free

Many conventional adhesives off-gas hazardous VOCs and can contribute to unhealthy air quality in the living space. This can defeat the purpose of building airtight and properly ventilated spaces. With KlimaGuard’s entire range of products you can be certain that your interior air quality won’t be affected negatively by this off-gassing over time. Sporting both Red List Free and EC1 Plus ratings, these tapes are guaranteed to have very low emissions. Red List free refers to the fact that these tapes don’t contain any materials from the Living Building Challenge Red List “worst in class” materials. These are materials, chemicals and elements known to pose serious health risks to humans and the environment. Many of these materials are very prevalent in conventional building products. KlimaGuard products contain NONE of these Red Listed materials, which is great news for inhabitants and the environment! EC1 Plus is the highest emission class label in the GEV-Emicode rank, representing the limit of what is technically feasible today and means these products have undergone extensive institutional testing and are guaranteed to meet the most stringent emission limits.

4.    Vario is Smart

When constructing a new building, one of the most important factors affecting building longevity is moisture management. If moisture is not properly managed, serious damage can occur to the structural materials and, when serious enough, can result in at best, costly repairs, and at worst structural failure. Weather resistive barriers are designed to mitigate moisture problems by keeping rain and water vapor on the outside of the structure from getting inside and allowing water vapor from the inside (from things like cooking, showering, and just breathing) to pass to the outside. Many of today’s barriers are considered “smart” vapor permeable, meaning that they vary their vapor permeance depending on conditions, i.e., they have low permeance in cool dry weather, and high permeance. KlimaGuard Vario retains this property, meaning that every inch of your exterior barrier will have the right vapor permeance for the conditions.

5.    KlimaGuard Now Has Products for Interior Applications

Up until now, KlimaGuard has only had the Vario line of exterior building tapes. This line of tapes has proved to be very popular, and we have continued to improve on its performance and packaging. We have also had the opportunity to work with some new materials and are very excited to be introducing two new product lines under the KlimaGuard name! KlimaGuard Green is our new interior air sealing tape, and comes in 2 ¼”, 4”, and 6” size rolls. This is perfect for interior applications on OSB, plywood, foam boards and other surfaces where an air and liquid watertight seal are required. The flexible and stretchable material of the tape makes it great for use around irregular shapes and cable and pipe penetrations. The other latest addition to our lineup is the KlimaGuard Dübl, this double-sided adhesive tape is great for mounting sheet membranes and vapor control layers without needing to puncture them, keeping your membrane layers truly airtight.

With these new additions to our range of building tapes, there are even more reasons to try KlimaGuard, and this list showcases just a few of them. Plus, we’ve recently expanded sales into the Canadian market, so now you can get these great products at great prices in the US and Canada.
